BMW has become the first automaker to integrate Apple's new iPhone Digital Key feature, starting with the upcoming 5 Series and extending compatibility to most BMW models produced after July 1, 2020. This innovation allows you to unlock, drive, and share access to your vehicle using just an iPhone or Apple Watch, marking a significant step towards a phone-centric ownership experience. Key benefits include keyless entry, engine start, and the ability to set usage restrictions for other drivers.
The system utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC), a technology that enables short-range wireless communication between devices. To unlock the car, you simply hold your compatible iPhone near the door handle. Once inside, you place the phone in the vehicle's wireless charging/smartphone tray, which then allows you to press the start button to drive away. The digital key is stored securely in the Apple Wallet app. A major advantage is that the key will continue to function for up to five hours even after your iPhone’s battery has shut down due to being low, ensuring you're never locked out.
Based on our assessment experience, the process is designed for convenience, effectively turning your phone into a primary key fob. The feature supports sharing the digital key with up to five other people, each with their own Apple devices.
Compatibility is broad for models manufactured after July 1, 2020. The list of compatible vehicles in the U.S. includes:
Notably absent from the initial compatibility list are the X3 and X4 SUVs, the 7 Series sedan, and the discontinued i3 and i8. It is anticipated that these models will gain the feature with future redesigns or updates.
Beyond simple locking and starting, the BMW Digital Key offers practical management tools, especially useful for families. If you lend your car to a younger or less experienced driver, you can program usage restrictions directly through the key. These restrictions can include:
This provides peace of mind by promoting safer driving habits. The shared key is sent electronically, eliminating the need for physical handoffs.
According to Apple and BMW, compatible devices include the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and later models, the second-generation iPhone SE, and Apple Watch Series 5 and later. Apple also announced a "smart route" feature for Apple Maps that will be available for future electric BMWs, like the i4. This feature will automatically plan routes that include charging stops based on the vehicle's current range, addressing a key concern for EV owners.
To utilize the BMW Digital Key, you will need a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and a supported BMW model. This feature significantly enhances convenience and introduces a new level of control over vehicle access. For those considering a new BMW, verifying Digital Key compatibility is a valuable step, especially if you are deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem.
