The Minimum Viable Product (MVP) Studio at NUS Enterprise supports the National GRIP program, startups and research teams in building and testing their prototypes. We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Safety Manager to lead the safety operations at the NGRIP Innovation Hub. The Laboratory Safety Manager will be responsible for maintaining a safe, compliant, and fully operational lab environment that supports deep-tech startups without compromising safety standards. Safety Management & Compliance Develop, implement, and enforce safety protocols for chemical and biological labs. Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety documentation (e.g., SOPs, MSDS, risk assessments, training records, emergency response plans). Conduct regular inspections and participate in safety committee meetings; provide management with reports and recommendations based on safety assessments. Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Serves as the primary contact for safety audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance matters. Stay informed of relevant safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices; communicate updates to lab users and management. Ensure all materials and equipment meet safety requirements before being brought into or used in the lab. Training & User Support Design and deliver lab safety and training programs for all users. Maintain training schedules and ensure all users meet competency requirements before working with hazardous materials or equipment. Provide guidance on safe lab practices, including the development of risk assessments and SOPs. Ensure proper use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and always maintain PPE availability and safety kits. Coordinate emergency response drills (e.g., fire, chemical spill, evacuation) and ensure all lab users are familiar with procedures. Facility Oversight Ensure safety systems (e.g., fume hoods, eyewash stations, fire suppression, alarms) are operational and regularly maintained. Support general and preventive maintenance, lab housekeeping, and daily safety checks. Monitor and report faulty equipment or safety issues promptly. Collaborate with the Lab Manager to manage lab access control, ensuring only trained and authorised personnel can enter designated areas. Chemical, Biological, & Waste Management Oversee proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemical and biological materials in accordance with regulatory requirements. Maintain accurate inventories of hazardous substances and ensure safe handling procedures are strictly followed. Coordinate with licensed waste disposal vendors to ensure timely and compliant waste collection. Requirements Degree in Engineering, Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) or related qualification. Minimum 5-8 years of SHE experiences in lab safety management, ideally across chemical and biological labs. Deep, hands-on competence, and understanding in safety related matters. Strong technical competence in safety management systems, safety processes, SOPs, risk assessment, hazard identification, training programs, safety audits, regulation, incident response, etc. Familiarity with quality systems and industry standards is a plus. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders. Manage lab access control, ensuring only trained and authorised users can enter designated areas. Onboard new lab users with orientation on lab policies and available resources.
